A year for a day

The punishment of the generation that listened to the מרגלים was that they needed to wander in the desert for 40 years, one year for each day that the spies were in the Land.

Ever wonder what the calculation was? Why not a week per day or a month per day? Or maybe harsher, something like a decade per day?

A day and a year have a unique relationship. One day is Earth’s rotation in regards to the sun, and one year is Earth’s revolution around the sun. For a small minded person, it’s easy to think that after one day they have seen all the angles of the sun that there are. They saw it rise, they saw it set, dawn, dusk, the full package.

But what they are missing is that there is so much more to be seen. there are seasons, and when you see a full revolution you get to see so much more.

The message Hashem was giving was this, don’t think you can easily grasp the whole picture from one rotation, you need a full revolution to really see all the angles and vantage points that there are.

Let’s open our eyes and realize that as we rotate in our day to day lives there is so much more that we can see if we have the patience to follow a full revolution.
